The Roman Grande Bellezza, refined and elegant, can be found on the panoramic terraces of the Rhinoceros Foundation, Alda Fendi’s art palace dating back to the 1600s and opened in 2018 in the heart of the Velabro. With the renovation by architect Jean Nouvel, the structure was codified according to a strict minimalism to give voice to the enchanting surrounding panorama, a time travel through the centuries.

Today, this rooftop inaugurates a new season with the project signed Manfredi Fine Hotels Collection, owned by Goffredo and Leonardo Ceglia Manfredi. They acquired the management of RHINOCEROS Restau & RoofBar to make it an exclusive rooftop bar and restaurant with a view in central Rome, as well as a gastronomic and mixology space under the supervision of Executive Chef Giuseppe Di Iorio of the AROMA restaurant (1* Michelin). The Group has established itself with a portfolio of exclusive hotels and restaurants in Rome, in particular locations and services of excellence, aimed at an Italian and international clientele in search of “made in Italy” authenticity.

RHINOCEROS Restau & RoofBar is distinguished by a cuisine celebrating Italianness and Made in Italy products, with a focus on Roman tradition, according to the vision of chef Giuseppe Di Iorio in agreement with resident chef Alessandro Marata.

The Lounge bar, on the other hand, is the realm of mixology, where Bar Manager Matteo Zed expresses himself to the sound of “spirits,” the perfect executor of drinks with great aesthetics. He is capable of telling curious and fascinating stories through drink and, at the same time, evoke memories and arouse emotions: his menu is inspired by rhinos, according to a game of appearances that surprise for their combinations and flavors.ù

The interior design of the rooftop bar and restaurant with a view in Rome, gives a new identity, while fitting gracefully into the minimalism of the building, aimed at diluting the rigor of the structure. Primarily, the rhinoceros that gives the place its name remains the thread that runs through the entire concept, with its totems propping up the exterior floor. To accompany this, contrasting palettes of shades were chosen, with red dominating to recall the Foundation’s hallmark, as well as original shapes for the furnishings, between circular lines and soft curves in an optical art style.

PANORAMIC TERRACE 360

At the top of the palace, is the elevated TERRACE 360 overlooking Ancient Rome, revealed through the majestic winged horses of the Capitoline Hill, the millennia-old ruins and flowering Judas trees of the Palatine, that make the Hill even more beautiful. The sloping roofs and mysterious terraces of the exclusive mansions of the historic center frame the Basilica of St. Anastasius on the Palatine with the tolling of its bells while the verdant Circus Maximus looms to the right.
On the opposite side, one can admire the various fascinating pieces of Roman architecture layered through the centuries, such as the Temples of Vesta and Hercules Vincitore, the church of Santa Maria In Cosmedin a few steps from the Tiber, and, in the background, the domes of the Synagogue and St. Peter’s: a breathtaking view that opens up from the altana as you enter the smoky-colored tables. Set on large colored rectangles with patterned textures, it is lit up with light when the sun shines, to be reflected in the lacquered red rectangle that outlines the perimeter of the exclusive open kitchen.

PALATINE PANORAMIC TERRACE

On the floor below, rhinos in pixelated black-and-white reign in the vast terrace floor. Here, there are two environments “en plein air”: the first, reserved for the restaurant, is set up with cream-colored armchairs and anthracite tables, the second is dedicated to the realm of mixology. Finally, there is no shortage of the indoor restaurant, where you can glimpse from the window the magnificent Quadrifrontal Arch known as the Arch of Janus, the Capitol, St. Theodore. You can also admire two of the three main monotheistic religions. The small room, furnished with black tables marked by red brushstrokes, has walls with stone and brick, reminiscent of the ancient Romans’ construction technique of opus mixtum.

The experience offered by the RoofBar at Rhinoceros is an evocative journey of discovery through stories, flavors, culture and knowledge, refined mixology that becomes a moment to live and enjoy surrounded by the Great Beauty. The cocktail bar consists of a long counter, also lacquered red, equipped with tone-on-tone shelving for spirits. Stools and sofas in black and white textures keep company with unusual armchairs in bold shapes and bright hues.. Complimenting the furnishings are white marble tables, both low and at perimeter wall height, for an unforgettable aperitif or after-dinner drink with a unique view, wrapped in the warm light of small jewel lamps.The cocktail menu consists of classics and twists, presented in unconventional glasses,conceived by Bar Manager Matteo Zed, a lover of beauty and a firm believer that drink quality also passes through aesthetics and experience. The signature menu consists of eight drinks divided into three categories inspired by the same number of living rhino species. Vegan options and non-alcoholic cocktails make room among the offerings, where the focus on anti-waste is utmost.

It was in this urban context that French architect Jean Nouvel designed his Palace, aiming at recovering the building’s history, made up of minimal stratified traces, flanked by hyper-contemporary signs – such as exposed plants, steel panelling and concrete structures – with a view to a harmonization that would not blunt the contrasts and a creative concept that would preserve and, at the same time, innovate, in order to give balance to theneed for recomposition and dialogue with the pre-existing elements.
